What's In My Water
Our Graphic Design brief was anything to do with “Water”.
I know, right? Pretty vague.
I wanted to do something with a social dimension to it, so I chose to pursue the subject of water fluoridation, which is a topic that is fraught with controversy. Both proponents and detractors of the practice denounce each other of resorting to pseudo-science for justification – the usual protests touch on the ethical implications of mass medication, as well as question the need for such a dated and unnecessary practice. The more inflammatory detractors ply more radical theories involving governmental malpractice, underhanded corporate dealings, and intentional dumbing down of the public.
The folder also functions as an experiment primer meant to contain references to previous scientific studies on the topic, separated according to an international, and local scale. It attempts to present results not particularly sympathetic to either side of the argument.
It holds these documents while also serving as a clip-board for future note-taking, experiment charting, and personal thoughts.
This publication is part of a three-pronged project that also includes:
a) An infographic animation that presents the anti-fluoridation point of view.
and b) an online platform that calls for further dialogue, transparency, and localized research, while also providing timely updates about water sanitisation and fluoridation practices around the world.
